The original heavy tank design was started in 1937. There a limited development effort, but in May 1941 Hitler changed this and demanded that the tank was to be made. This does away with the thoughts that the Tiger was made as a counter to the T-34 and KV1's on the Russian Front. The real reason was the concern about the anti-tank and tank abilities of the British.
But when the Russian T-34s and KV series were encountered it defiantly helped to accelerate the design and production.

The Tiger I had been started as the VK 36.01 model, this was later switched to the creation of the VK 45.01 series, (P) for Porsche and the (H) for the Henshchel design. During the intial planning Hitler had wanted a tank that monted the Flak 41 88mm gun.
But Krupp who was making a turret had made one that could only take the 88 L/56. So with this problem they approached the Porsche team and had them agree to a statement to the Automotive design office of the Army Ordance department (Wa.Pruf 6), that there hull the VK45.01 could only mount the 88 mm L/56 from Krupp.
On 26th May 1941, Hitler after seeing the plans and status of the made the desisions; the heavy Panzersof Porsche and Henschel were to be acceleratedos that 6 of each would be ready for summer 42. He thought it necassary that frontal armor be 100 mm, 60 mm for the sides. The Porsche design gun (the Krupp gun), be upgraded to the 88 mm Flak 41 specs made by Rheinmetall.
Once more the Wa. Pruf6 asked Prosche if the Flak 41 would fit there Krupp turret but they responded that the only gun that would work was the 88 mm L/56 Krupp gun. Don't forget that Krupp was also making the turrets.
So finally Wa. Pruf6 sent out it's order for Porsche to mount 100 Krupp turret with the 88 L/56 onto there hulls the Vk 45.01(P), this was on 10th Sept. 1941.
By the 26th of Oct. 1942 a Tiger-Kommission met to see which model was to be the best of the two. They finally decided on the Vk. 45.01(H) with the Krupp 88 L/56. The Porsche design was stopped after only 10 of these units were finished. There were 90 hulls still to be used so they were eventually converted to PanzerJager Elefant, three were converted to Bergefagrzeuge (recovery vehiles), three were made into Ramm-Tiger and four were completed as PzKpfw VI (P).
On the 28th May 1941 Wa. Pruf 6 asked Henschel to design a new Fahrgestell (chassis) that would accomidate the 88 KwK. They were to have the new Vorpanzer which was a armored shield that dropped in front of the tracks to protect them in battle. This chassis was the Vk 36.01(H) it was not ready for Hitler meeting in May of 41 but they had closely followed the specs given to them. In a letter on 27th Sept. 1941 by the head of the Wa Pruf 6 he stated that the Henschel hull was to be adapted to take the Krupp turret. This lead to the Vk 45.01(H).
This lead to the creation of the Tiger I as we know it.
